What is an Action?
Actions are tasks that users complete on the platform, often tied to points.
- Standard Actions are accessible by all users on the platform, no matter what organization they’re associated with. These are focused on getting ready to vote, mostly tied to the user's Next Election.
- Custom Actions are developed for specific organizations, and shown just to users who are members of their voting teams. These are focused on broader ways to get involved, such as volunteering and outreach.
How does Motivote know which Actions to show me?
The Get-Ready-to-Vote Actions that you see are based on the address you entered in the Find Your Next Election Action along with the voting method you selected in the Select Your Voting Method Action.
Some Actions, like getting registered to vote, are based on the state where you're registered or plan to get registered. For other Actions, like making a plan to vote, the version of the Action you see depends on if you plan to vote in-person or by absentee/mail-in ballot. For a full list of Actions, view this list.
In addition to Get-Ready-to-Vote-Actions, you may see additional actions that are set up by the organization that is hosting your voting team. These Actions may include opportunities to sign up for volunteering shifts or an invitation to share content on social media.
Does everyone on Motivote see the same Actions?
No. The Actions that you see are personalized for you based on the address you entered in the Find Your Next Election Action along with the voting method you selected in the Select Your Voting Method Action. Users who are voting in different elections or have selected different voting methods will see different actions.
You will also see specific Actions that are determined by the organization that is hosting your voting team. For Actions set up by organizations, only users who are members of specific teams can view and complete them.
How does Motivote know if I completed Actions?
For some Actions, you will complete them directly in the platform and the Motivote system will log that you have completed it. For example, in the Find Your Next Election Action, you have completed the Action when you save your address.
For other Actions, you complete the Action on an external platform and then come back to Motivote to "self-verify" that you completed it. We use this model for voter registration and absentee ballot request Actions.
Will I be able to complete more Actions than I currently see?
Depending on when you join, you will not be able to see all available actions on the platform. Some Actions are “unlocked” by pre-requisite actions, while some Actions launch closer to the user’s next Election Day. For a full list of Actions, view this list.
Where does the info in the Actions come from?
For info on election procedures and deadlines, Motivote incorporates data from trusted third-party partners including CivicEngine and US Vote Foundation as well as Secretary of State websites.
What do the points mean?
You can earn points for completing Actions and inviting more people to your voting team. The points contribute to the total points for any team you are a member of, and you can use them to enter to win prizes in the Prize Store. Motivote assigns the points value of each Get-Ready-to-Vote Action based on the importance of the task and the “lift” that it takes to complete. If organizations create Custom Actions for their networks, they choose the points value.
Why do some Actions have "0" points?
Motivote does not assign points to Registering to Vote, Requesting an Absentee Ballot, or Voting itself. This is to ensure compliance with federal and state election laws prohibiting “things of value” in exchange for voting. Because points translate into items with monetary value in the Prize Store, not assigning points to voting actions ensures the model adheres to election law.
