Columbia Votes! (Columbia College of Chicago)

Thank you to Sharon Bloyd-Peshkin, Professor of Journalism and Faculty Fellow for Civic Engagement

Osprey Vote (University of North Florida)

Thank you to Susan Trudeau, UNF Center for Community-Based Learning

Presenter Notes

  1. Students should speak to students for maximum effectiveness.

  2. Train your students how to redirect inappropriate comments/behavior using classroom management techniques.

  3. Train students to speak extemporaneously. No reading! This will make them stand out from the other campus offices.

  4. Engage the students as soon as possible in the presentation by asking them what (social) issues they care about. Explain what a social issue is. (slide 2)

  5. Connect social issues with service learning and civic education, remaining non-partisan. For example, students can share how campus opportunities help them affect change. (slide 3-7)

  6. Ask students to pull out their phones and sign up. At this point, my staff asks who lives more than 3 hours away. They then share personal stories of how inconvenient it is to travel home to vote. (slide 8)

  7. We use "photo frames" to take group pictures at the end and post them on Instagram. We ask students to follow us to see their own photos. That way, we grow our following.
